3rd Year Apprentice Welder

Based at our Sotherby Road facility (Middlesbrough) Kye stands out for a number of reasons.

Kye’s physical presence is the first thing you will notice – he is a ‘big lad’, but he certainly is not intimidating. Quiet by nature this young man has found his calling – he is a natural welder.

Unfazed by anything we have asked him to do, he volunteered to work away from home to gain experience at the ‘sharp end’, working on a time bound ‘turnaround’ on a leading Oil and Gas company refinery.

After 2 weeks in this high pressure, delivery based environment, Kye came away with glowing recommendations and a zero weld repair rate, not bad for an apprentice. But it’s not only his performance that makes Kye a success, it’s his attitude, his desire to learn, his willingness to listen and his ambition to be the best he can.

In a recent routine appraisal Kye scored an unprecedented 49/55, going over and above requirements in 9 out of 11 categories and meeting requirements in the remaining 2.

Kye initially attracted interest from us back in 2013 when he was first interviewed for an apprenticeship with the company, what stood out for the interview panel was that Kye had voluntary attended his training school (NETA Stockton) for the past 12 months to learn engineering. The school, located 14 miles from his home address was a daily bus journey starting at 7.30am every morning.  This attitude and an eye to learn and advance, in his now chosen profession of welding is credit to Kye and all the hard work and commitment he has shown.

A great story not only for Kye but for his employer’s ENGIE Fabricom.
